Steven Tyler joins Joe Perry in NYC, claims band is still together

The state of Aerosmith took another turn last night, when frontman Steven Tyler unexpectedly joined bandmate Joe Perry on stage for the guitarist’s solo show in New York City. As previously reported, the latest Aersomith saga hit the streets last week when Tyler claimed he was going to be working on “Brand Tyler”, to which Perry claimed earlier this week that not only would the band and Tyler be parting ways but that they would even be open to the idea of performing with a new singer. With that all happening in the past week or so, Tyler’s antics last night at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza caught everyone – including Perry – by surprise.

“I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith,” Tyler declared to the crowd. “Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors. But I, motherfucker, am the rainbow!” The Joe Perry Project then launched into “Walk This Way” with Tyler on lead vocals.

“There was all this commotion during our encore break and somebody said, ‘Steven is here.’” Perry told the Rolling Stone. “And I was like, ‘What?’.” The two talked briefly and Tyler asked to sit in with the group on the final encore. “Being an acquaintance of 40 years, I said, ‘Why not?’” Perry said. “So he came up and sang and that was the last I saw of him.”

The magazine is also reporting that despite Tyler’s appearance, the band’s status with Tyler is still in limbo. Tyler reportedly wants to take some time off from the band, who are ready to record and tour now. “We have so many different options to fill up that time,” Perry said. “Anything is possible at this point. Basically, any communication that we’ve had over the last couple of months has been through managers, so that’s been pretty strange.”

Meanwhile, Perry is gearing up for two New England show this weekend in support of his new solo album, Have Guitar, Will Travel. On Friday, he’ll play the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom and on Saturday, he’ll hit Boston’s House of Blues. Where will Tyler be? Who knows.
