The Disco Biscuits jam the night away

Staff writer Eli Badra takes on his review of Saturday night’s Disco Biscuits show from the point of view of a hardcore Biscuits fan. Let the record show, he seriously enjoyed the show as well.

Hey, man. I just got back from Saturday night’s Disco Biscuits show at the House of Blues. Man, that place is sweet! Well, ok, there was a pretty major fiasco at the will-call line. People just surrounded the windows without rhyme or reason, and it took nearly 45 minutes for some of us to get our tickets! And there was no re-entry, so we couldn’t go out and smoke a cig as us Bisco fans are wont to do. But other than that this was a damn good show, dude!

I mean you know how it is: we, the fans, travel all across the country to see these guys as many times as possible. This is a band whose fans consider it “cute” to have seen them a measly eighteen times. Well if I may say so it is us hardcore fans that really get things going for the band. I mean you’re literally surrounded by us right from jump street. Everyone’s real excited, chatting about last night’s set in Vermont, and nobody could stop talking about their friend Molly. She must be really nice. Hehe.

So, like, the appeal, it’s because of how cohesive they are from one show to the next. I mean they do this thing where their songs are really malleable, right? So they’ll start a song, play the first one or two parts of it, and then veer off into other songs and come back maybe like an hour later and finish the song. Sometimes they won’t even finish a song until the next night.

The House was totally packed, wasn’t it? I mean people just flooded onto the dance floor, pushing forward, trying to get as close front as possible. It was crazy, dude. But I guess that’s to be expected when a band is putting on such awesome music, huh? This is the kinda stuff you’d want to blow your ears out to. Man, can you believe they played “Astronaut” so early? I mean that’s usually a late set kinda tune, but I guess the Biscos really wanted to impress our fair city. I mean it was pretty much blast off from there. They just kept going, weaving in and out of songs like it was no big deal. Allen Aucoin really was awesome. I mean his rhythm was just spot on the entire time, appropriately playing pretty straight up disco beats the entire time. They would jam for upwards of 20 minutes sometimes and the next thing you’d know they’d be playing a new song, only to do it again!

You know what was cool, was when they were jamming out to “Abraxas”, getting faster and faster while Aron Magner’s keyboards flew through outer space. And remember Jon Gutwillig’s sick guitar solo? That guy can pump up the momentum like it’s nobody’s business. He just has the best sense of where to take a solo, like when to sit on a riff for a while and let the audience go crazy with repetition before everything explodes into the majorest of major keys. And when all’s said and done they brought it all back to “Astronaut” and played the end of the song. You see what I mean? That was the coolest. They closed the first set with “Digital Buddha”, which was pretty cool, introducing the rare vocal line, though the Disco Biscuits are an instrumental band at heart. We didn’t even hear the guys’ voices until an hour into the show.

But they really started to get things going in the second set, man. They kicked it off with an awesome sandwich of “Shelby Rose”, “The City”, and the end of “Shelby Rose”. What’s cool about “The City” is, as you know, they only really play it in cities that they like – their second home, as it were. I guess they have a lot of second homes, but whatever. “Shelby” had this great way of starting off nice and calmly before kinda slowly building and jumping into double time, and then we all sang& “Every night is a heaven sent” like it was our, like, mantra or something, which I guess it was if you consider how much we follow them around. It was cool because the song had comparatively less electronic stuff going on, more of a straight jam band tune, y’know? “The City”, well, I know I don’t have to tell you that that really sent the crowd into a frenzy. I mean Boston is probably like number three or four on the list of the Bisco’s biggest crowds. Seriously, I’ve never seen so many people looking for tickets outside a show before.

Oh man, but you know what was the best? I mean I know they do this pretty often, but Jon totally let loose this ridiculous guitar like anthem as “M.E.M.P.H.I.S.” came to an end, and the next thing we know the band was playing the coolest cover of Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell” ever. That just got everyone to throw an absolute fit. Everyone was dancing and waving their fists in the air shouting “Run! Run! Run!” I mean yeah, it’s way more common than their “Have A Cigar” they did back in Denver – remember that? – but who doesn’t love a good cover out of nowhere? Of course, they stretched the thing into a twenty-minute jam, which was really cool. They closed things with “Basis For A Day” before stepping off stage for a measly three minutes before coming on. Jon had the nerve to call Fenway Park an “atrocity across the street”, the one killing of the buzz as it were, but he can be forgiven because New Yorkers just don’t know any better.

They came back on for an encore of more “Basis For A Day”, and then, dude, can you believe they played “Aceetobee”? They’ve only ever played that maybe a few times. They must have really wanted to break in the House of Blues. When all was said and done, the two sets felt like they were maybe an hour long, which I think says a lot to just how good our Biscos are. This is the kind of live experience everyone ought to go through at least once. It’s just the most fun, a wild dance party and an impressive demonstration of virtuosity all wrapped into one – and a killer light show, to boot. Just see them once, and it’ll become immediately clear how we can just follow them night after night across this country. They’re totally worth the effort.
