Oasis guitarist/vocalist Noel Gallagher has abruptly left the band. Gallagher, the band’s primary songwriter, quit the British rockers on Friday after another fight& with his brother and frontman Liam backstage at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris, France.

Noel made the announcement to Oasis fans by issuing a statement on the band’s website on Friday. “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight,” he said. “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

On Saturday, he released another statement with more details on why he left the band. “The details are not important and of too great a number to list, he said. “But I feel you have the right to know that the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable. And the lack of support and understanding from my management and band mates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new.”

He apologized to fans that had tickets to the show in Paris and their other scheduled shows before stating, “In closing I would like to thank all the Oasis fans, all over the world. The last 18 years have been truly, truly amazing (and I hate that word, but today is the one time I’ll deem it appropriate). A dream come true. I take with me glorious memories…I’ll see you somewhere down the road. It’s been a fuckin’ pleasure.”

According to a report from NME, the Gallagher brothers’ fight began when Liam arrive to the show in Paris drunk after traveling along. Noel confronted Liam for being unprofessional and also voiced his disappointment with the band’s management and security for not stopping his brother. The report goes on to say that “The frontman is said to have ‘exploded in rage’ and started saying things about Noel’s children. When Liam hurled his guitar at Noel, the guitarist caught it, stamped on it then smashed it to pieces. And then he walked away.”

Of course, Oasis have been defined by the Gallagher brothers’ love-hate relationship over the past two decades. A similar incident happened in 2000 when Noel left the band during their tour of Europe only to return for shows in Ireland and England.

Oasis released a new album Dig Out Your Soul, last fall. The band backed their seventh studio album with a brief stateside tour that did not stop in Boston.
