With Simon Cowell set to leave the judges table at American Idol after this year, speculation is rampant over who his replacement will be. Rumored names have included everyone from music industry veterans to Howard Stern, but super-producer Steve Lillywhite has emerged as an intriguing candidate who has already begun campaigning for the gig.

Lillywhite is best known for his work with U2, the Dave Matthews Band, the Rolling Stones,  Morrissey, Phish, Matchbox 20, Counting Crows, Jason Mraz and more. “I am current, I am credible, I am yours,” Lillywhite proclaims in a YouTube campaign video posted below. The English-born/New York-based producer continues, I can listen to your artists on American Idol and I can tell whether if their going to be good or they can be great.”

Lillywhite told Billboard.com that he hasn’t heard anything from American Idol producers 19 Entertainment or Fox Television since he started the campaign for Cowell’s job.
