Newport Folk Festival set for this weekend

The Newport Folk Festival will return this weekend for another two days in the sun at Fort Adams State Park. A mix of contemporary and classic artists will be featured throughout this weekend’s festival across three stages.

Veteran John Pine will headline the main stage on Saturday, preceded by main stage acts Andrew Bird, Calexico, Brandi Carlile, The Low Anthem. Doc Watson and David Gold, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket, Sam Bush and Blitzen Trapper will play the second stage. Headlining the main stage on Sunday will be Levon Helm’s Ramble on the Road. The Swell Season, Richie Havens, The Avett Brothers and Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings will also play the main stage, while Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, The Felice Brothers, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band highlight the second stage. Fans coming to the festival, will also find a new configuration of the three stages which present ad for the first time in many years there will be a stage set-up with the confines of historic Fort Adams.  Formerly called the Waterside Stage, the rostrum, which will sit right in the middle of the Fort, will be renamed the Quad Stage. Rhode Island’s own Elvin Perkins in Dearland will play that stage on Sunday, after replacing Justin Townes Earle, who was forced to back out of the show earlier this week after he sliced his hand and needed 19 stitches.

Officially named George Wein’s Newport Folk Festival after its co-founder, the festival will kick off with a special concert from Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers at the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Friday, July 30. Tim O’Brien and Sarah Jarosz will also perform.

Tickets for the Newport Folk Festival are still available through Tickemaster. Two-day passes will be available for $125 while single day tickets will be sold for $69. Discounted tickets for children aged 3 to 15 will be available for $15 each day. Tickets for the kick-off show range in price from $30 to $85.
