Wilco to play Newport Folk Festival kick off concert

Organizers for theĀ  announced today that Wilco will headline a special kick-off concert for the legendary Rhode Island-based event. The Chicago-based rockers will perform at Fort Adams State Park on Friday, July 27. Tickets for the concert, which will also feature Blitzen Trapper and Megafaun, will go on sale Friday at 11 a.m. through Ticketmaster for $45.

Wilco continue to tour in support of their latest album, The Whole Love. The band’s eighth studio effort and follow-up to 2009’s Wilco (The Album) was released last September through the band’s newly launched dBpm Records. Recorded at the band’s Chicago recording studio The Loft, The Whole Love was produced by frontman Jeff Tweedy with multi-instrumentalist Patrick Sansone and Berklee College of Music alumnus Tom Schick. It was nominated for “Best Rock Album” at the 54th Grammy Awards in February.

“We are excited to return to the tradition of presenting a Friday concert at the festival, and we are happy to have Wilco, Blitzen Trapper and Megafaun kick off what already promises to be a great weekend of music,” said Newport Folk Festival Producer Jay Sweet in a press release.

The kick-off concert was last held in 2010 when Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers performed at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in downtown Newport

All seating for the concert will be general admission on the open lawn at Fort Adams. Organizers are asking fans to arrive as close as possible to gates opening (scheduled for 4 p.m.). Limited edition keepsakes will be given to the first 1,000 people to enter the gates.

As previously reported, My Morning Jacket and Jackson Browne will headline the 53rd edition of the Newport Folk Festival this summer, which is is scheduled to take place on July 28 and 29 at Fort Adams State Park. Conor Oberst, Iron & Wine, Patty Griffin, Punch Brothers, Tom Morello also highlight the list of over 40 acts set to perform at the legendary festival.
