US Air Guitar Championships kick off in Boston tonight!

The US Air Guitar Championship kicks off at Harpers Ferry in Allston Rock City tonight in an attempt to find the country’s best air guitarist. Boston by way of Maine’s three-time defending champion McNallica will look to defend her crown tonight and return to the US Championships in New York City this July, along with the winners from the 16 other cities the tour will visit.

Contestants perform for one minute of a song and are judged on a combination of technical merit, stage presence, and “airness,” described as “the extent to which the performance transcends the imitation of playing a real guitar and becomes an art form in and of itself.” Contestants are allowed to play a song of their choosing in round 1, then in round 2 the top five competitors play a song chosen by the judges. Former US & World Champion Hot Lixx Hulahan will serve as one of the event’s judges. Bjorn Turoque, the star of the documentary “Air Guitar Nation”, will host tonight’s show.

Entering its seventh year in the US and its fifteenth year worldwide, official national championships currently are held in 24 countries around the globe. The Air Guitar World Championship will be held in Oulu, Finland this August.

Tickets for tonight’s event are $16 at the door. For more information on the US Air Guitar Champions, please visit their website.
