Trey Anastasio makes plans for Boston

, Staff

With a new solo album due for release early next year, Trey Anastasio has revealed plans to road test the material with a brief fall tour. The Phish guitarist will return to Massachusetts for a two-night stand at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6. Tickets for each of the shows will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. through Live Nation for $39.50 and $49.50.

Though no official release date has been set for Paper Wheels, fans can expect the band to preview several tunes off the follow-up to 2012’s Traveler on the upcoming tour. The album was recorded in less than a week at The Barn, Anastasio‚Äôs reconstructed barn-turned-rehearsal/recording studio located outside Burlington, Vermont. It was produced and engineered by Bryce Goggin, who helmed several Phish albums and has also partnered with Anastasio on previous solo projects, and mixed by Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Van Morrison).

According to a press release, Anastasio was inspired by the immediacy of Stax-era recordings and consequently decided to record each of the the songs on Paper Wheels live. Often requiring no more than one or two takes, he and his backing band played and sang together in a single room. Fans can get a taste of the new material with “Bounce”, which is streaming below and available for free through his website.

Following the shows in Boston, Anastasio will close out the tour with a performance at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine on December 7.

Meanwhile, Phish will begin a four-night stand at the American Airlines Arena in Miami on New Year’s Eve. The band released Fuego, their twelfth studio album and first since 2009’s Joy, in June.
