Steve Martin highlights Boston Pops 2012 schedule

The Boston Pops have revealed plans for their 2012 schedule at Symphony Hall, which will begin on May 9 and run till June 16. Highlighting the list of special guests are Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers and Bernadette Peters, while popular themed nights like Film Night and Gospel Night will return. Tickets for all of the shows are now on sale through the Symphony Hall box office and website.

Actor/Comedian turned bluegrass favorite Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers will join the Keith Lockhart-led Boston Pops Orchestra for a pair of special shows on Tuesday, May 29 and Wednesday, May 30. Billed as an “Evening of Comedy and Bluegrass”, the concerts will mark the first time Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers have performed with an orchestra. Tickets for the show range in price from $22 to $92.

The Boston Pops will kick off their 2012 season on Wednesday, May 9 with a gala Opening Night concert featuring Broadway star Bernadette Peters. The 63-year old singer was most recently featured on a new cast recording of Follies released in November 2011. The show will kick off with an all-Gershwin set including Rhapsody in Blue and the photographs of Joseph Sohm set to a classic Pops tune. The grand opening night festivities will also include a complimentary pre-concert reception and a post-concert CD and book signing with Peters. Tickets for the show range in price from $41 to $125.

Ann Hampton Callaway, one of this country’s great interpreters of the American Songbook, brings her captivating sound to Symphony Hall to pay tribute to the adored Barbra Streisand on May 15 and 16. Boston Pops Laureate Conductor John Williams to the podium, June 1 and 2, for Film Night, a favorite program for Symphony Hall audiences each year. Husband and wife team and Broadway stars Jason Danieley and Marin Mazzie join the Boston Pops on June 5, 6, and 8 for a tribute to American songwriter Cole Porter. Charles Floyd and the Boston Pops Gospel Choir will celebrate the 20th annual Gospel Night on June 9 with help from American Idol’s Melinda Doolittle, gospel singer Crystal Aitkin, and more guests to be announced.

The Boston Pops will pay tribute to the “City Of Champions” on May 23, 24 and 26 with a special sports themed show. Members of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, New England Patriots and New England Revolution will make special guest appearances to help Keith Lockhart lead the orchestra.
