Okkervil River will return to New England this winter as they tour in support of their new album, The Silver Gymnasium. The Austin-based indie rock favorites will make their way to Massachusetts for a show at The Sinclair in Cambridge on Saturday, March 29. Tickets for the show are now on sale through Ticketmaster for $20.

The Silver Gymnasium, Okkervil River’s seventh studio effort and follow-up to 2011’s I Am Very Far, debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200 after its release in September. It marked the band’s highest charting album to date. The concept album takes place in lead singer Will Sheff’s hometown of Meriden, New Hampshire in 1986. Produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., John Mellencamp), it features singles “It Was My Season” and “Stay Young” (video is streaming below).

To complement the release of The Silver Gymnasium, Okkervil River has released an 8-bit adventure video game, an interactive map, a video documenting Sheff’s high school bands and more.

The band recently exceeded their fundraising goal on Kickstarter to complete a film entitled “Down Down The Deep River”, inspired by The Silver Gymnasium. According to the band, the short film is “about growing up in small town New Hampshire and a tribute to the science fiction and fantasy adventure films of the 80’s”. In other news, Okkervil River have also released the third edition of their Golden Opportunities EP series. The five-track EP is comprised of 80’s covers and can be streamed and downloaded for free here.

Okkervil River last performed in Boston as part of the Boston Calling Music Festival at City Hall Plaza in September.
