Newport Sunset Series reveals first set of concerts

Spring is finally here and with it, plenty of summer concert announcements. The organizers for the Newport Sunset Music Series have revealed the first set of summer shows to take place at Newport Yachting Center in downtown Newport, Rhode Island. The eclectic lineup features Toots & The Maytals, Willie Nelson & Family, The B-52’s, Foreigner, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, the Doobie Brothers and Styx.

Toots & The Maytals are scheduled to open the Newport Sunset Music Series on Saturday, May 25. The group’s most recent release was 2012’s Unplugged on Strawberry Hill. The album captures twelve iconic tracks recorded during a live acoustic performance in Jamaica’s Blue Mountains. The show will actually serve as a mini reggae festival with special guests Anders Osborne, The Ravers and other acts to be named opening the show. Tickets for the show will go on sale Thursday, March 28 at noon through Ticketmaster for $24.

Celebrating his 80th birthday on the road, Willie Nelson & Family will stop in Rhode Island for a performance in Newport on Saturday, June 15. Nelson will be touring in support of his forthcoming album, Let’s Face the Music and Dance. Scheduled to hit stores on April 16, the album is comprised of pop, rock, jazz and country classics drawn from the 1930’s to 1950’s. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $59.50 to $79.50, will go on sale Thursday, April 4 at noon through Ticketmaster.

The B-52’s will deliver a headline the Newport Sunset Music Series on Friday, June 21. With no new album to support, fans can expect a set packed with hits and fan favorites. Their last offering of all new material was 2008’s Funplex, which was their first since 1992’s Good Stuff. The tour will be the band’s since original member Keith Strickland announced in December that he was retiring from touring. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $39.50 to $69.50, are now on sale through Ticketmaster.

Led by Mick Jones, Foreigner will perform at the Newport Yachting Center on Friday, June 28. The classic rockers released a 3-disc collection Feels Like The First Time in September of 2011. The collection includes two CDs: Acoustique: The Classics Unplugged and Juke Box Heroes: Brand New Digital Recordings of Foreigner’s Greatest Hits, as well as the “Live In Chicago” DVD. More recently, it was announced that Jones and original frontman Lou Gramm will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame later this year. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $45.50 to $69.50, will  go on sale Thursday, April 18 at noon through Ticketmaster.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will bring their signature brand of funk and soul to Newport on Saturday, July 6. The Brooklyn-based band’s last studio release was 2010’s I Learned the Hard Way. They’ll be joined by special guest James Hunter, who will be touring in support of his brand new album Minute By Minute. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $29.50 to $49.50, will go on sale Thursday, April 11 at noon through Ticketmaster.

The Doobie Brothers will return to the Newport Sunset Music Series on Wednesday, July 17 as part of their summer tour. The classic rock favorites’ last offering of new material was 2010’s World Gone Crazy, their first in over a decade. It featured special guests appearances from Willie Nelson and Michael McDonald. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $45.50 to $79.50, will go on sale Thursday, May 9 at noon through Ticketmaster.

Styx will sail into the Newport Yachting Club for a performance on Thursday, August 22. The band’s most recent release was 2010’s Regeneration: Volume 1, a EP comprised of re-recordings of classic Styx songs, as well as one new track. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $49.50 to $69.50, will go on sale Thursday, April 18 at noon through Ticketmaster.

Rounding out the initial list of summer concerts is Beatles tribute band, The Fab Four. They’ll perform on Saturday, August 17 with tickets scheduled to go on sale Thursday, May 2 at noon through Ticketmaster for $25.50 to $45.50.

Also returning to the Newport Yachting Center this summer will be a trio of genre specific day festivals. The Newport Blues & BBQ Festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 20, while the Newport Waterfront Reggae Festival will return on Saturday, August 10 and the Newport Celtic Rock Festival on Saturday, August 24. The complete lineups for each of the festivals, along with additional concerts will be announced over the next few months.
