Sunset Music Series adds new festivals to lineup

Organizers for the Sunset Music Series in Newport, Rhode Island have another slate of shows to their 2012 lineup, including a pair of new daylong festivals. Taj Mahal, Gaelic Storm and Johny Winter are just some of the recently announced acts that will perform at the Newport Yachting Center in downtown Newport. Tickets for each of the shows are now on sale through the venue’s box office and website.

The Newport Blues & BBQ Festival will make its debut on Saturday, August 18. Taj Mahal will headline the day-long event, which will also include sets from Shemekia Copeland, Joanne Shaw Taylor and John Lee Hooker Jr. Tickets for the event are now on sale for $45. Tickets purchased on the day of will be $55.

Replacing the Newport Waterfront Irish Festival on Labor Day weekend, the Newport Celtic Rock Festival will take place on Saturday, August 25. Gaelic Storm will headline the day-long event, which will also include sets from Eileen Ivers, The Town Pants, Screaming Orphans and Tartan Terrors. More entertainment will be announced but attendees can expect to see Irish step-dancers, pipe & drum bands, a marketplace of goods and traditional pub fare. Tickets for the event are now on sale for the special advance price of $25. After April 30, tickets will cost $30. Tickets purchased on the day of will be $40. The festival is free for children under the age of 12. Fans can also purchase the “The Snug” package for $60, which will provide all-day admission, access to an elevated Reserved Deck seating with cocktail service, Guinness beer vouchers and a swag bag featuring the official event t-shirt and other goodies.

Both of the festivals will look to repeat the success if the Newport Waterfront Reggae Festival, which will return for its fourth edition on Saturday, August 11. The Reggae festival lineup and ticket information has not yet been announced.

Also added to the summer lineup is a show being called the “Classic Rock Rewind” with Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Mountain’s Leslie West and Savoy Brown’s Kim Simmonds on Friday, August 10. Collectively, these five veterans have earned 4 Grammy Awards, 10 Grammy Nominations, 14 Billboard-charting songs, 18 Billboard-charting albums, 10 Gold albums, and 4 Platinum albums. Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, and West all played the original Woodstock in August of 1969. Tickets are now on sale for $38 and $58.

Sublime tribute band Badfish has also been added to the Newprot Sunset Music Series with a show scheduled for Friday, July 16. Tickets are now on sale for $18 and $38.

As previously announced, Ziggy Marley will perform in Newport on Friday, June 29 and k.d. lang and The Siss Boom Bang on Friday, August 17.
