Mike Doughty will return to the road this spring for a special in support of his new autobiography, “The Book of Drugs”. The former Soul Couching frontman turned author will visit Massachusetts for performances at the Regattabar at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge on Saturday, May 5. Shows will take place at 7:30 and 10:00. Tickets are now on sale through the venue’s box office and website for $20.

Prior to the show in Massachusetts, Doughty will also perform at The Met in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Thursday, May 3 and the Dover Brick House in Dover, New Hampshire on Friday, May 4.

At the shows, fans will get a chance to hear Doughty read stories from from “The Book of Drugs “including his struggles with addiction and the rise and fall of his band Soul Coughing. In between readings, Doughty will be playing songs from his latest solo album, last year’s Yes and Also Yes. There will also be a question and answer session at the end of each performance.

Doughty, who began a solo career when Soul Coughing broke up in 2000, released “The Book of Drugs” earlier this year. “I’d be blabbing about how I’d write a book one day and an editor called me up and was like, ‘here’s some money,'” he explained in a recent interview with OC Weekly. “So I had to do it. My impetus was that I had a bunch of really good stories. I don’t really have or claim to have any kind of overarching wisdom on my life. But I have a zillion tales that I’ve been telling over dinner and coffee and I set out to lay them down and put them together chronologically.”

The veteran rocker has also announced plans for a new project called the “Lo-Fi Lodge”. For $20, fans can receive one new unreleased recording per a week for 32 weeks. According to Doughty, 11 of the recordings will be songs that have not been released in any version whatsoever, while the rest will be “spun-around versions of tunes that changed big time, with surprising parts added or subtracted”.

Doughty also recently released a new live album called The Question Jar Show. The album features recordings collected from shows he did in 2009 and 2010 with bassist/cellist Andrew “Scrap” Livingston. Between stripped down renditions of songs, he answers am array of questions.
