LSMS reveals first set of shows

Organizers for the Lowell Summer Music Series have revealed the first set of performers for this year’s concert series. Ziggy Marley, Pat Metheny, George Thorogood & The Destroyers and Gaelic Storm will all perform at Boarding House Park in downtown Lowell this summer. Tickets for each of the shows are now on sale through the official Lowell Summer Music Series website.

Touring in support of his latest release, Wild & Free, Marley will hit Lowell on Friday, June 22. Released in June, Marley’s fourth studio album follows his 2009 children’s album Family Time and is his first release of adult material since 2006′ Love Is My Religion. It was co-produced with Grammy Award winning producer Don Was (The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan) at Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood, California. Guest appearances on Wild & Free include actor Woody Harrelson on the title track, which was used for California’s Proposition 19 campaign to legalize recreational marijuana, Heavy D on “It” and Marley’s eldest son, Daniel, on “Changes”. Metheny’s latest project, the Pat Metheny Unity Band, will perform at Boarding House Park on Friday, August 3. The band features saxophonist Chris Potter, drummer Antonio Sanchez and bassist Ben Williams. Earlier this month, Metheny won the “Best New Age Album” Grammy Award for his 2011 album, What’s It All About. The solo acoustic set is comprised of 10 classic cover songs. George Thorogood and The Destroyers will return to Massachusetts and play the Lowell Summer Music Series on Saturday, August 4. The band continues to tour in support of their latest album, 2120 South Michigan Avenue. Released last June, the album is named after the address of Chess Records’ Chicago headquarters. Grammy Award winner Tom Hambridge produced 2120 South Michigan Avenue, which also features guest spots by Buddy Guy and Charlie Musselwhite. It features covers of blues legends Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter and other Chess greats, as well as new original songs written by Thorogood, Hambridge and Richard Fleming. Gaelic Storm will bring their brand of Celtic rock to Lowell on Friday, August 24. The California-based veterans, who first rose to fame thanks to an appearance in the blockbuster film Titanic, continue to tour in support of 2010’s Cabbage. The band’s seventh studio effort, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Chart, includes a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Cecilia”. Boarding House Park is a general admission venue and children age 12 and under are admitted free.
