Organizers for the 2012 Newport Jazz Festival lineup have revealed the initial lineup for the 58th edition of the historic festival, which is set for August 3 to 5. Leading the way will be Dr. John & the Lower 911, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Pat Metheny Unity Band.

The Rhode Island festival will kick off on Friday, August 3 with an opening concert featuring Dr. John & the Lower 911 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino. Additional artists and ticket information will be announced at a later date.

Legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette will celebrate his 70th birthday at Newport by performing two sets, one with his quintet and another with an All-Star group. Guitarist Bill Frisell will be a fixture at this year’s festival. On Saturday, he will present The John Lennon Songbook, and perform with celebrated jazz trio The Bad Plus. Then on Sunday, he will appear as part of the Jenny Scheinman & Bill Frisell Duo. Other notable artists scheduled to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival include Maria Schneider, Kurt Elling and Dianne Reeves. In total, over 25 artists will perform across three unique stages at Fort Adams State Park. The complete lineup is available below.

“In keeping with our mission that jazz is an ever evolving art form, we have produced a festival that features many of the younger artists that represent what jazz is today and tomorrow along with hall of fame veterans that have made jazz the great music that it is,” declared George Wein, producer and founder of the Newport Jazz Festival and Chairman of the Newport Festivals Foundation, in a press release.

General Admission tickets for the Fort Adams State Park portion of the festival are now on sale through Ticketmaster for $74 (tickets will rise to $84 on the festival weekend, if available). A limited number of 2-day passes are available for $135. Discounted tickets for children between 3 and 15-years of age are available for $15, while children under 3 will be admitted for free.

The reserved and premium seating section has been re-designed for this year’s festival at Fort Adams State Park. The area in front of the stage will be returned to the general admission audience and a new, wider reserved section has been created with easy access from the road and better sightlines. Premium seating tickets are $125 per day, while reserved seating is available for $90.

Natixis Global Asset Management (NGAM), who launched their global musical initiative with the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival, also announced they will return as the festival’s presenting sponsor for the next three years.
