Judges save Casey Abrams on American Idol

American Idol judges used their one and only save decision to keep Casey Abrams on the show, after the results for this week’s voting shockingly left the 20-year old singer in the last spot. Considered by many as a favorite to win the competition, judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler did not hesitate in using their one save opportunity for Abrams.

This week’s bottom three included Thia Megia, Stefano Langone and Casey Abrams. Host Ryan Seacrest revealed that Megia was safe before the elimination came down to two male contestants for the first time this season. Abrams chose to singe Ray Charles’ “I Don’t Need No Doctor” as last song to try and impress the judges. He was quickly cut off by Jackson, who along with Tyler and Lopez announced he was safe. You can watch the whole moment and the crazy reaction, below.

In another twist, Seacrest annoucned that the top 11 Idol contestants will embark on the show’s summer tour, instead of the usual ten. However, two contestants will be sent home after next week’s vote.

The eleven contestants opened the show with a Motown themed performance of their own before Stevie Wonder joined them and later they all sang Happy birthday to Tyler. Sugarland took the Idol stage for the first time and delivered their hit single “Stuck Like Glue” and former Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson returned “home” to sing her latest single, “Where You At”. The show also included a guest appearance by wrestler Hulk Hogan (who awkwardly told Paul McDonald and James Durbin that they were safe from elimination).
