John Mellencamp will start the 2011 leg of his No Better Than This tour in Lowell. The legendary singer-songwriter will play the Lowell Memorial Auditorium on Thursday, February 3. Tickets for the show, which range in price from $76.50 to $130, are now on sale through the venue’s box office and website.

Mellencamp is touring in support of his release, No Better Than This, which was released in August on Rounder Records. The album was produced by T Bone Burnett, who he collaborated with on his last release, 2008’s Life, Death, Love and Freedom. It was recorded at a variety of historically significant locations around the South.

“It was absolutely the most fun I’ve ever had making a record in my life,” said Mellencamp in a press release. “It was about making music – organic music made by real musicians – that’s heartfelt and written from the best place it can come from.”

Fans can expect a roughly 24-song/2+ hour performance that will find Mellencamp using numerous configurations ranging from solo acoustic to full-tilt rock with his band. There will be no opening act for the show but rather a screening of Kurt Markus’s film “It’s About You”. The film documents Mellencamp’s 2009 summer tour of minor league ballmarks with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson and the recording sessions for No Better Than This (get a preview of the film below). Additionally, a selection of his paintings will be on display in the lobby.

A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $255 and include one reserved ticket located in the first 10 rows from the stage, a t-shirt, collectible tour poster, limited vinyl copy of No Better Than This and a commemorative tour laminate.
