Great Big Sea will celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2013 by taking the party out on the road with an extensive tour of North America. The band will hit Boston for a two-night stand at the Wilbur Theatre on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. Tickets for each of the shows will go on sale Friday at noon through Ticketmaster for $27.50 and $35.

Comprised of Alan Doyle, Sean McCann and Bob Hallett, Great Big Sea will begin the anniversary celebration with the release of a new compilation album called XX. Scheduled to hit stores on October 30, XX will be made available as both a Greatest Hits 2-CD set and a full Box Set with bonus discs and a DVD. In order to express the band’s two sides, the first disc on XX covers the biggest hits from their more pop-oriented repertoire, while the second contains some of their most loved traditional and folk songs. To balance out the discs, the band recorded six new songs.

The XX box set contains a third disc featuring some of the band’s lesser known excursions and experiments. Another disc features one of the band’s first interviews, recorded in the fall of 1993 for CBC St. John’s, which includes rare and unheard songs from the band’s earliest days. The box also contains a special book covering the many ups and downs of their career, along with lyrics, stickers, and a calendar covering a year in the band’s life. The box is completed with a DVD of the band’s early career edited together by founder Sean McCann.

Along with the two nights in Boston, the tour will also stop in Burlington, Vermont (Flynn Theatre on April 23) and Portland, Maine (State Theatre on April 24).
