Spalding & Monae to open for Prince at Mohegan Sun

Prince has revealed the special guests that will open his trio of shows later this month at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Grammy Award winner jazz singer and bassist Esperanza Spalding will open the shows scheduled for Friday, December 27 and Saturday, December 28, while rising R&B star Janelle Monae will perform on Sunday, December 29. Tickets for each of the shows are available through Ticketmaster for $125 and $195.

Spalding, an alumnus of Berklee College of Music, recently released a new single called “We Are America”. Her last studio release, 2012’s Radio Music Society, garnered Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for the track “City of Roses”.

Monae has worked with Prince on her critically-acclaimed album The Electric Lady and opened for him on his 2011 tour, “Welcome 2 America”. The Electric Lady, Monae’s follow-up to her 2010 debut album The ArchAndroid, debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200 after its release in September. It features singles “Q.U.E.E.N.” (featuring Erykah Badu), “Dance Apocalyptic” and “PrimeTime” (featuring Miguel). Prince contributes vocals to “Givin Em What They Love”.

As previously reported, Prince has working in the studio recording new music with his 21-piece super group The New Power Generation and his rock band 3rdEyeGirl featuring guitarist Donna Grantis, bassist Ida Nielsen and drummer Hannah Ford. A 3rdEyeGirl album entitled Plectrum Electrum is expected to be released in early 2014. Fans can get a taste of the new material with singles “Breakfast Can Wait” and “Da Bourgeoisie”.
