Dropkick Murphys have announced the release of Rose Tattoo: For Boston Charity EP. The EP features three songs, including a newly recorded version of the band’s song “Rose Tattoo” featuring Bruce Springsteen. The digital EP is available exclusively through iTunes for $1.29 with proceeds benefiting the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Along with the Springsteen collaboration, the EP includes a pair of acoustic tracks recorded at the Gibson Showroom in Las Vegas just four days after the tragic events on April : “Don’t Tear Us Apart” and “Jimmy Collins’s Wake”.

In a recent interview with the Springsteen fanzine Backstreets, the band explained how the collaboration came to fruition. “Bruce actually called us up the day of the bombing and asked what he could do to help,” said guitarist James Lynch. “We didn’t have to reach out. He was there for us.” Bassist and vocalist Ken Casey added, “As soon as we figured out what we were going to do, Bruce went into the studio, recorded his parts and nailed them right away.”

The EP is the third installment of a three-part the band’s “For Boston” movement. The first stage was a special t-shirt, which can be purchased through the band’s website for $24.99 or $26.99 (depending on size). The front of the shirt says “For Boston” with a photo of the skyline, while the back displays the city’s seal with the following message, “Thank you, to all who purchased this shirt”. The second was an sold out afternoon benefit concert at the House of Blues last month with State Radio, Big D & The Kids Table, The Parkington Sisters, Old Brigade and Barroom Heroes.

The funds from each of the “For Boston” initiatives will be disbursed directly to those affected by the tragedy through the band’s charitable foundation The Claddagh Fund. The nationally-recognized official 501(c)3 charity mission is to serve the most vulnerable in our communities.

Springsteen previously collaborated with Dropkick Murphys on “Peg o’ My Heart” from the Boston band’s 2011 album Going Out in Style. Both have also previously joined each other on stage at their respective concerts in Boston.
