Colin Meloy makes plans for solo tour

After a successful set at last weekend’s Newport Folk Festival, Colin Meloy has announced plans to launch his first solo tour in five years this fall. The frontman and songwriter for The Decemberists will return to New England when he hits Massachusetts for a night at the Somerville Theatre on Monday, November 4. Tickets for the show will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster for $33.

On the upcoming tour, which will hit ten cities, Meloy will be playing songs from throughout his career and debuting new material too. In keeping with tradition, Meloy is recording an EP of cover songs to be sold on the tour. Previous installments of the Colin Meloy Sings… series have included tributes to¬† Morrissey, Shirley Collins and Sam Cooke.

The fall tour marks a return to music for Meloy, who has recently been devoting time to “The Wildwood Chronicles”, a series of novels for children that he created with his wife, illustrator Carson Ellis. The series debuted in 2011 with “Wildwood” and continued in 2012 with “Under Wildwood”. “Wildwood Imperium”, the third volume, will be published on February 4, 2014.

The Decemberists’ most recent release was 2011’s The King Is Dead, which received received two Grammy Award nominations for the hit single “Down By The Water”.
