Brett Dennen has revealed plans to return to Massachusetts next year as he continues to promote his latest album, Smoke and Mirrors. The California-bred singer-songwriter will perform at Royale in Boston on Friday, February 28. Tickets for the show will go on sale Friday at noon through Ticketmaster for $25.

Smoke and Mirrors, Dennen’s fifth studio effort and follow-up to 2011’s Loverboy, was released in October. Work for the album began when Dennen retreated to his mountain house in Northern California following his tour commitments. After finding inspiration in his surroundings, he took the songs to Nashville to record with producer Charlie Peacock (The Civil Wars) and a new set of musicians. The resulting 10-song set features lead single “Wild Child” (video is streaming below).

“It was time to get back to basics,” said Dennen of Smoke & Mirrors in a press release. “I wanted to return to the folk and acoustic music I loved when I began writing. I decided to tap into my memories and explore new emotional territory as honestly as I could.”

“Brett and I spent a lot of time just building out the arrangements,” explained Peacock in a press release. “From the production side, he encouraged me to make every song uniquely its own while keeping it cohesive – and I think we did it. His wonderful music aside, Brett is certainly one of the most whimsical people I’ve ever produced – a true original.”

Following his show in Boston, Dennen will perform at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine on March 4 and Higher Ground in Burlington, Vermont on March 5.
