Boston Music Awards celebrate the year’s best

Dropkick Murphys win Artist of the Year & Live Artist of the Year

The Boston Music Awards, now in its 24th year, have come and gone once again with another lively celebration at Boston’s Liberty Hotel on Sunday. Perhaps the most notorious of this year’s nominees, Dropkick Murphys, walked away with the night’s highest honor, taking home the Artist of the Year award, as well as Live Artist of the Year. The Celtic rockers were on hand to accept the award from friend “Irish” Micky Ward.

Mean Creek won Album/EP of the Year with Hemophiliac, while the David Wax Museum won Song of the Year with “Born With A Broken Heart”. Moufy was named New Artist of the Year and Daddy’s Junky Music founder Fred Bramante was honored with the Unsung Hero Award. The complete list of winners for each category is available bwloe.

Many of the year’s nominees were on hand to perform including Electronic Artist of the Year winner Freezepop, Pop Rock Artist Of The Year winners Gentleman Hall and Rock Artist of the Year winners Viva Viva, amongst many others.

One of the best performances of the night came from Viva Viva, who packed the Liberty Ballroom, as fans, media, and fellow musicians all looked to get a glimpse of the Live Artist of the Year nominees. The five-piece troopered through issues with one of their mics to deliver a highly entertaining set.

Upstairs, The Wandas shook off some delay in setting up (something that is inevitable with so many performers scheduled to play) and made their set worth the wait. Later, Shea Rose ended her set in grand fashion with a cover of The Cranberries’ “Zombie” before inviting a chorus of flag-bearing singers to join her on her closing number.

The awards event was held once again at Boston’s Liberty Hotel, and the organizers seemed to have worked out many of the kinks from the previous year. The traffic between the Liberty’s many beautiful, yet cozy rooms was much improved, allowing attendees to more easily travel from performance to performance. However, we hope that they’re able to resolve the sound issues in the hotel’s massive lobby for next year.
