International Pop Overthrow hits Boston this week

The International Pop Overthrow returns to Massachusetts this week for its eighth year. Beginning tonight and running through Sunday, 30 bands will perform at P.A.’s Lounge in Somerville.

The festival will feature a wide range of Boston and New England-based bands with several bands from across the country. Air Traffic Controller, Corin Ashley, June Millington, Powderhouse, This Blue Heaven and Watts highlight the list of Boston-based performers at this year’s International Pop Overthrow (IPO) festival. They’ll be be joined by fellow New Engalnders 1.4.5., The Beauty & Disturbance Orchestra, Bird Mancini, Jason Bourgeois, The Brigands, The Buckners, Peter Buzzelle, Hannah Cranna, The Destries, Eddie Japan, Fireking, Fox Pass, The Irresponsibles, Lemonpeeler, The Lexingtons, The Mesmerines, Pleasant Sweaters, POPFILTER!, The Shellye Valauskas Experience, Natalie Smith, Suit Of Hair and The Varmints. A handful of non-New England bands will peform including The Grip Weeds (New Jersey), Cliff Hillis (Pennslyvannia) and Dave Rave (Hamilton, Ontario – Canada).

Tickets for each of the 21+ shows are $10. A complete festival schedule with estimated set times, is available below.

This week’s event in Boston is part of the IPO’s East Coast tour, which will hit New York City and Toronto, Canada later this month. Earlier, this year the IPO’s West Coast tour made stops in Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles and Vancouver, Canada. The IPO also made its eighth appearance in Liverpool, England with shows at the world famous Cavern Club.

Now being touted as the largest music festival of its kind, the IPO “celebrates the music made famous by such pop heroes as The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Badfinger while focusing on the vast amount of current artists who rely on melodic songcraft to express their musical tastes” according to a press release. From The Beatles to Green Day and Fleet Foxes, festival aims to celebrate the evolution of pop music.
