Billy Bragg to play the Somerville Theatre
Billy Bragg has revealed plans for a stateside tour. The English folk-punk rocker will make his way to Massachusetts and perform at the Somerville Theatre on Thursday, June 28. Tickets for the show are now on sale through the venue’s box office and website for $36.50 and $31.50.
On the upcoming tour, Bragg will be promoting Fight Songs. Released last fall, the album is a compilation of songs he had been giving away for free online over the past decade. It also includes several new songs written for the album.
“For much of the past 10 years, polemical songs have been met with indifference, but the times are changing and once again there is a need for songs with fight in them,” declared Bragg in a press release.
Fans may also be treated to a Woody Gunthrie cover or two during the upcoming tour. Mermaid Avenue, Bragg’s acclaimed collaboration with Wilco that put music to the unreleased lyrics of Guthrie for the first time, was recently released in a new deluxe package to mark the 100th anniversary of Guthrie’s birth. Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions, a three-CD-plus-DVD set includes the original two volumes (the second re-mastered); a third volume with 17 previously unreleased recordings from those sessions; the 1999 documentary on the sessions, “Man in the Sand”; and a 48-page booklet with new liner notes by Nora Guthrie, lyrics, archival photographs, and facsimiles of lyric sheets and sketches by Woody Guthrie.
