American Idol down to the Top 13 finalists

And then there were 13. After revealing the Top 24 contestants just last week, American Idol changed things up this year and quickly cut the field down to the Top 13 finalists for Season Ten last night.

Making their way into the top ten via fan voting were: Casey Abrams, Naima Adedapo, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Ashthon Jones, Stefano Langone, Jacob Lusk, Scotty McCreery, Paul McDonald, Thia Megia, Haley Reinhart, Karen Rodriguez and Pia Toscano. Rodriguez is a student at Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

After America’s votes for the Top 10 were revealed, judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler chose Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones and Stefano Langone as wild cards. The three were chosen to advance after outshining Jovany Barreto, Kendra Chantelle and Robbie Rosen, in a new format where the judges gave six of the fourteen contestants the opportunity to sing on more song before the live audience. Also left packing there bags were Jordan Dorsey, Clint Jun Gamboa, Tim Halperin, Brett Loewenstern, Lauren Turner, Ta-Tynisa Wilson, Rachel Zevita and Julie Zorilla

American Idol will continue next Wednesday, March 9 (8-10 p.m.), when the Top 13 take the stage to perform songs by their favorite artists. The contestants will be mentored by acclaimed producer and Interscope Records chairman Jimmy Iovine.

Fans can then tune in the following night, Thursday, March 10 (8-9 p.m.), for the live results show  find out who receives enough votes to stay in the competition and who is sent home. Idol alum Adam Lambert will perform on the live show, as will Diddy-Dirty Money with Skylar Grey.

In related news, American Idol Season Seven winner David Cook has recorded the farewell song for the show’s 10th season. The song, chosen by Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller, is a remake of Simple Minds’ 1985 smash hit “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” and will air each week as contestants are eliminated on the Thursday results shows.
