The Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble roared back to life in 2011 with a loaded lineup featuring 24 of the city’s finest local talent. Despite the stiff competition, John Powhida International Airport soared through the competition and took home the coveted crown over Spirit Kid and OldJack at TT the Bear’s Place on Friday night.

John Powhida International Airport was the favorite going into the final night after winning the third night of Rumble’s preliminary rounds and the second semifinal. Spirit Kid had earned a spot in the semifinals via a Wild Card selection, while OldJack was a later replacement in the semifinals and then earned the Wild Card selection for the finals. Powhida, a Boston music veteran with multiple Boston Music Award nominations, is no stranger to the Rumble. In the 2006 Rumble, he lead The Rudds to a second place. His current band features Derek Demulling, Dave Erickson, Brendan Haley and Rafi Sofer.

The Rumble, which celebrated its 32nd year, is considered by most as the city’s premier battle of the bands. The Luxury took home the crown at the last Rumble in 2009. Previous Rumble champions include:  Girls, Guns & Glory (2008), Township (2007), The Campaign For Real Time (2006), Reverend Glasseye (2005), Jake Brennan & the Confidence Men (2004), The Dresden Dolls (2003), The Gentlemen (2002), Bleu (2001), Darkbuster (2000) and The Sheila Divine (1999).
