Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the Boston Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble will return next month with some of the city’s best up-and-coming bands performing over the course of three weeks at TT the Bear’s Place in Cambridge. On Sunday night, event organizer Anngelle Wood of WZLX’s Boston Emissions revealed the field of 24 bands who will compete for the coveted crowd.

Never limited to the boundaries of Boston, the Rumble celebrates the scenes and styles that comprise the New England music community. This year’s Rumble crop features an exciting assortment of the region’s offerings with the following bands set to participate: Airport, Await Rescue, Barricades, Butterknife, The Color and Sound, Doom Lover, Emma Ate The Lion, Feints, Goddamn Draculas, Gondoliers, Guillermo Sexo, Harris Hawk, The Life Electric, Petty Morals, Rebuilder, Sinnet, Slowdim, Summoner, Tigerman WOAH, Vary Lumar, Western Education, When Particles Collide, Yellabird and Z*L.

“The Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble is a time-honored tradition, a local institution, and the World Series of Boston Rock,” declared Wood, who is in her fifth year as the event’s organizer, in a press release. “More than anything it is a full-on 9-night party that consumes most of April and garners attention, press, cash, prizes, new fans, and lasting friendships for the bands involved. We walk away from it each year with amazing new friends. And sometimes a little #RumblePlague. Take your vitamins.”

Each of the preliminaries will feature four bands with the first round running from Sunday, April 6 to Saturday, April 12. The Rumble will take its traditional “day of rest” on Wednesday, April 9. The winners from each night, along with a pair of Wild Card selections, will move on to the semi-final round on Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18. The finals will take place on Friday, April 25.

Local music fans who plan on attending every night will want to buy the all-inclusive pass for $70, which is now on sale through TicketWeb. Information on single night tickets will be announced soon.

Now in its 35th year, the competition is the longest running battle of the bands in the country. Beyond serving as the city’s premier battle of the bands, the Rumble has been considered by many as a springtime music festival celebrating the local music scene. With no application process, bands are invited to perform at the Rumble and may only appear once. All bands are paid for their appearance with additional prizes and payment if they go on to the semifinals and finals rounds.

Eddie Japan took home the crown at the last year’s Rumble over Twin Berlin and Glenn Yoder & the Western States.
