The Structure (2010, EP)

How did you form?

The Motivated Sequence was formed about six months ago and has gone through many changes. The majority of us go to Suffolk University and found each other through a series of coincidences. We each come from very diverse musical backgrounds, but somehow we all seem to pull together and enjoy the music we create.

Who are some of your influences?

Okkervil River, The Long Winters, Jens Lekman, Ryan Adams, David Bazan, Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Bruce Springsteen

Finish the sentence, someone would like your band if they like…

… going on a road trip with six of their best friends in a very small car.

What has your most memorable moment as a band been?

Finding rehearsal space is always difficult for us, so we occasionally sneak into empty rooms at various Universities on the weekends to practice. The campus police usually don’t give us a hard time, but a few weeks ago one of them caught us somewhere we weren’t supposed to be and became extremely angry. He threatened to call the BPD unless “we played some Zeppelin”. We don’t know any Zeppelin. So we busted into a really bad hard rock jam and told him it was Zeppelin. Obviously he wasn’t that big of a Zeppelin fan.

Walk us through your songwriting process.

It’s pretty collaborative. Zach will usually come in with the songs mapped out with lyrics and chords and the band will just tear it apart and turn it into something completely different. Chrissy will start writing harmonies and it builds from there. We really work each song to death until it’s something we all feel good about.

Who is the best musician in your band?

That would definitely be a tie between Angela, our violin player, and Beth our keyboard player. They are both classically trained with 15 years under their belts. Throwing those two in with a bunch of “less than classical people” definitely makes for some interesting (and confusing) musical conversations.

What is your favorite local venue?

TT the Bear’s Place. Awesome sound, good drinks, best vibe in the city.

What separates you from other local bands?

I think that we have a really unique mix of people in this band and it creates something that our fans can really relate to. We are really dedicated to all of our material. It changes all the time, our songs are never really finished.

What do you have coming up that people should know about?

We are launching our new website soon!

We are really excited about it. It’s going to be a lot more than just a mp3 player and show dates. We are hoping to make it something that people want to check out more than once.

Convince our readers to see your next show.

We are a fairly new band and we are committed to making a dent in the Boston music scene. We love playing music and I think that comes through in our live performances. We are having the best time of our lives and we want everyone who see’s us to feel the same way!
