How did you form?

The Gravel Project was originally formed in 2010. I had a few original songs and a concept for a new group, and we went into the studio to record some tracks for what became our EP. It didn’t take long before we started playing a lot of shows, and since then the band has evolved in many ways. The players have changed since the beginning and we’ve assembled a large catalogue of music.

Who are some of your influences?

Everyone in the band listens to all styles of music, from rock, blues, jazz to world. I think there are lots of different elements that influence our sound, and our songwriting has been greatly inspired by bands such as The Allman Brothers, James Brown, The Grateful Dead, and lots of old bluesman including Muddy Waters, Albert King, and Freddie King. As a guitarist, some of my favorite players are Jimi Hendrix, Robben Ford, Jimmy Herring, Eric Clapton, and Wayne Krantz.

Finish the sentence, someone would like your band if they like…

… upbeat, bluesy, funky, improvisational, rock n roll!

Walk us through your songwriting process.

I usually first bring a song structure to the band, something that could stand on its own being performed solo with an acoustic guitar. Then we collectively work on it as a group, and suss out the grooves and the nuances, which really bring the song to life.

What song of yours should people listen to first and why?

“Blues for LA” because we’re often told it’s our best song.

Tell us a little bit about your latest album.

There’s something for everyone in there. The songs include everything from danceable funk, to hard hitting blues/rock, to world beats, and even a rootsy, Nashville tinged ballad. It’s our first full length CD, and features eleven tracks and over sixty minutes of music, including nine originals songs and two reinvented covers.

What has your most memorable moment as a band been?

Completing our new debut album has felt like a great accomplishment as group, and we all feel like we’re at new point with lots of momentum. Holding a copy of the new album in my hands has been my personal highlight.

What is your favorite local venue?

I love the Orpheum, as it feels like one of the last old theatres in Boston with lots of character. I’ve seen some amazing shows over the years there.

What do you have coming up that people should know about?

Tomorrow night we’ll be playing our album release show at Johnny D’s in Somerville!

Convince our readers to see your next show.

Come see us live if you love upbeat, guitar driven, bluesy, groove music, that makes you want to move!
