How did you form?

The band’s first formation performed under the name 2-5 Days, which included another member. In the summer of 2008 the band’s name changed to The Cantstanjas, and very soon after the band solidified as Pat DeCola and Andy DeCola.

Who are some of your influences?

We are extremely influenced by The Beatles, especially George Harrison. We’ve been told that we sound like a mixture of The Strokes and Van Morrison, which we took as a huge compliment as we consider The Strokes our second biggest influence.

Finish the sentence, someone would like your band if they like…

… indie rock and roll with soulful ukulele.

What has your most memorable moment as a band been?

We once played in a small bar called The Crossing, everyone there loved our set and it was a killer experience.

Walk us through your songwriting process.

You have to have an emotion, or a theme in mind, even before writing any lyrics. After that’s established the music should reflect that emotion or theme, allowing the listener to know what the band was thinking during the writing of the song. However, there are those special times where one of us comes across an idea that sounds brilliant, and when that happens you just have to run with it.

Who is the best musician in your band?

Well, Pat is definitely the better guitar player, but there’s no doubt that Andy is the best ukulele player in the band.

What is your favorite local venue?

We’ve enjoyed every venue that we’ve played, honestly every place we’ve played we’ve had a great experience. However, if we had to choose one, we might say that, although we haven’t played there, the Paradise Rock Club is a great venue and we would love to jump on that stage someday.

What separates you from other local bands?

Every band you see today has a guitar player, however we have yet to see another band use the electric ukulele to the extent that we do. Its a fantastic instrument and we suggest it to all!

What do you have coming up that people should know about?

We have a special Festivus show on December 23 at Hennessy’s Hooley House in Boston. Festivus is a fantastic holiday made famous by the legendary comedy ‘Seinfeld’. At this special show we suggest everyone dress up as their favorite Seinfeld character! Perhaps the best dressed will win a special prize…

Convince our readers to see your next show.

If you’re looking for a new band to follow and you’re sick of run of the mill boy bands playing three chords, you need to check out The Cantstanjas this Friday at Copperfield’s in Boston! It shall be a great night full of great bands, great drink, and great memories!
