Sail Away with Booty Vortex

BMS talks with vocalist Julia Cruz about the band's upcoming concert cruise

On Sunday, Booty Vortex will jump aboard the Provincetown II and rock their annual “Summer Carnivale” concert cruise as part of the Rock and Blues Concert Cruises series.

Known as Boston’s finest funk and disco dance cover band, the 12-piece outfit delivers a lively show that keeps the crowd dancing and singing-along. Whether it’s on land or on the ocean, these guys know how to have fun. With that in mind, we thought we’d catch up vocalist Julia Cruz for a fun interview to discuss the band’s upcoming concert cruise.

Boston Music Spotlight (BMS): Have you ever played on a boat before?

Julia Cruz (JC): This is our 4th year playing on the boat for the Rock and Blues Cruise. It’s a whole lotta fun being out at sea – feeling the motion of the ocean as we play great music, dance around and do what we love to do. It can be a little tricky keeping your balance when we hit waves, but that’s all part of the fun. This year we’re on a bigger boat (The Provincetown II) and we’ll get to play outside on the deck for the first time – weather permitting of course. All the Booties are really looking forward to that!

BMS: What type of boat would you have and what would it’s name be?

JC: Our boat would be a pirate ship…filled with lots of booty! And we’d call it “The Fantastic Voyage”!

BMS: Okay, so you are sailor, what’s your go-to sea shanty?

JC: Actually, some members of the band have a lot of sailing experience, but they’re much better musicians than sailors. Any sea-shanty with cold beer and good tequila will do!

BMS: You are stranded at sea with one album – what is it and why?

JC: Thanks to the amazing minds at Apple, we’ll never have to be stranded with one album again – the iPod will keep us groovin’ for years on our island of Booty! But you can be sure there will be plenty of P-Funk, Sly & The Family Stone, Tower of Power, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and Donna Summer to keep us happy.

BMS: What can you expect from your upcoming concert cruise?

JC: We expect a gorgeous day for the cruise – sunny and low 80’s – lots of party people, great music and plenty of Booty shakin on our floating dance floor!

Booty Vortex will perform on the Provincetown II on Sunday, July 24 as part of the Rock & Blues Concert Cruises series. The ship boards at 2 p.m. and departs at 3 p.m. from the World Trade Center Pier in the Seaport District. Tickets for the 21+ event are $18 in advance with the discount code “Booty” or $28 on the day of the show.
