Boston Music Spotlight announced today plans for the final round of the 2010 BMS Battle of the Cover Bands. The event will take place on Thursday, May 13 at Oliver’s Nightclub at the Cask’n Flagon. Now in its second year, the Boston Music Spotlight Battle of the Cover Bands expanded to a bigger and better format for 2010 and the results were even more exciting than expected.

In a search to find the area’s best cover band, this year’s battle moved to a tournament style where Red Square (night #1), the Grab Brothers Band (night #2) and Big Party Orchestra (night #3) each edged out tough competition during the three preliminary rounds held at the Hennessy’s Hooley House to earn a spot in the finals. Remedy (night #1) and The Whammy Bars (night #3) have been selected to perform at the finals as the battle’s two wild card selections.

At the show on May 13, the competing bands will perform before a panel of five judges: Hank Morse (DJ – WROR’s The Loren and Wally Morning Show), Aaron Shadwell (lead singer of 2009 BMS Battle of the Band champions Shadwell), Lindsey Gardner (Founder of Beechwood Graphics), Jed Heneberry (Boston Music Spotlight Journalist) and Kelly Boyle (Boston Music Spotlight Marketing Director). Bios for each of the 2010 BMS Battle of the Cover Bands judges is available below.

Each of the bands will be judged on in the following categories: Musicianship, Vocals, Timing of Set, Stage Presence, and Crowd Reaction. Points are awarded on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the highest. Points in the Crowd Reaction category will be worth double.

Beyond bragging rights, the bands will be competing for a grand prize worth over $2,500 including: cash, a paid gig at Hennessy’s, a professional photo shoot from Dise Photography/The New Scene, graphic design services from Beechwood Graphics and printing services from Printing Sources, Inc. “We’re thrilled to be hosting the finals of our second annual Battle of the Cover Bands,” said Rory Flynn, President and Editor-in-Chief of Boston Music Spotlight. “The preliminary rounds proved to be a great time and we truly have five awesome bands that will make for an exciting championship round. Thankfully, we have a very experienced and knowledgeable panel of judges that will select the band that will earn the title of ‘Best Cover Band in Boston’ and with it a great grand prize.”
