Boston Music Awards reveal 2010 nominations

Organizers for the 23rd Annual Boston Music Awards have announced the slate of nominees for this year’s ceremony, which will take place at the Liberty Hotel on Sunday, December 5.

Leading the way with four Boston Music Award (BMA) nominations this year, including Artist of the Year and New Artist of the Year, are Worcester-based outfit Dom. J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf followed with three nominations, including Artist of the Year. Amanda Palmer, Eli Paperboy Reed and The True Loves, Mean Creak, Kingsley Flood, Ad Frank & The Fast Easy Women, Bad Rabbits and Sarah Borges each earned two nominations.

Dom, Wolf and Palmer are joined by Passion Pit and Josh Ritter in the Artist of the Year category. An eclectic field of artists make of the field of nominations for Album of the Year: 7l & Esoteric’s 1212, Eli Paperboy Reed & The True Loves’ Come and Get It, Wolf’s Midnight Souvenirs, Dom’ Sun Bronzed Greek Gods and Mean Creek’s The Comedian.

BMA organizers also made several changes to the categories for this year’s awards. Producer of the Year, which was awarded in three different genre categories last year, has been merged into one overall award. Pop and R&B Arist of the Year has been merged into one award while DJ and Electronic Artist of the Year have been split into two different categories. The Gospel/Choir Act of the Year has been dropped. New categories added to his year’s BMAs include: Video of the Year, Best Live Music Venue, Best Music Blog, Best DJ/Dance Night, Best Live Ongoing Residency and Best Boston Artist That Doesn’t Live In Boston. Barry & The Remains will be awarded the BMA’s Hall of Fame award, while the recipients for Humanitarian of the Year and Unsung Hero will be announced at a later date.

Fans can vote through the BMA’s official website at Voting more than once is allowed but not encouraged. The Boston Music Awards Voting Academy accounts for two thirds of the final votes while the public accounts for the remaining one third. Voting closes at 5 p.m. on Monday November 29.

Performing at the BMA’s this year will be Barry And The Remains, Jenny Dee And The Deelinquents, M-Dot, Dom, Mystery Roar, Gozu, Lenny Lashley’s Gang Of One, Moe Poe, the Jazz Tellers Trio, Varsity Girls, Sodafrog, Debo Band, Sea Monsters, DJ’s Kon, Leah V, Frank White, Knife & Die Young and Peter Parcek 3 with Dwight & Nicole, Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers and Johnny A. The live performances will take place in multiple rooms located within the Liberty Hotel.

Tickets for the 2010 Boston Music Awards are now on sale through General Admission tickets are available for $20, while VIP tickets are available for $99 and include a cocktail reception with nominees, performers and industry insiders. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Music Drives Us foundation.

  2. How does a Charity Single get overlooked by the BMA’s? Thats what I want to know.
    I did something that no one else has done in MA. I got 20 local artists from Lawrence, MA together to record the charity single “TRUST AND BELIEVE” (Group known as LawTown Voice) with proceeds going to Haiti.
    Yes, I did the “Quincy Jones’ thing, Think “We Are The World”. Meetings after meetings, recordings, photo shoots, meeting with the media, meeting with the Mayor of Lawrence. I mean, I did a lot for one person. When I sit back and think about it, it really blows my mind. I just dont understand how the BMA’s are NOT aware of this project? Someone should inform them. it would be nice to receive the “Humanitarian of the Year” award for this. Just sayin’.
