Joe Perry says Steven Tyler has left Aerosmith

To say that this has been an eventful year for Aersomith is quite the understatement. Unfortunately, its been for all the wrong reasons. Their summer tour never saw the full band on stage together and now comes word that they may never share the stage again. In a variety of media outlets, guitarist Joe Perry has indicated that frontman Steven Tyler has left the band.

Tyler told Classic Rock Magazine that he intended to pursue music without his bandmates in Aerosmith. “I don’t know what I’m doing yet, but it’s definitely going to be something Steven Tyler,” he said. “working on the brand of myself – Brand Tyler.”

In the same article, guitarist Brad Whitford revealed that the band would entertain the idea of moving on without Tyler. “I’m not sure how good that would look,” he said. “It would largely depend on who we could get and who would want to do it. That’s big shoes to fill. Nobody could replace Steven or imitate him – he’s one of a kind. But if somebody was willing to do it and the chemistry was right, why not?”

Late last week, Perry told the Las Vegas Sun that “Steven quit as far as I can tell,” citing the reports in Classic Rock Magazine and the band’s lack of commutation with the singer. He went on to say that he thinks Tyler has been thinking about leaving for awhile. “Obviously he hasn’t been giving 100 percent to this thing for a long time,” Perry said. “He’s obviously had this planned for a long time. To disregard his brothers to the point where we have to find out about it on the Internet – it’s like, ‘See you later, Bud.’ I still care for him as a person, or at least the person I used to know. But things change.”

Yesterday, Perry talked with Chuck Nowlin of WZLX. In the interview, which is streaming on the station’s website, Perry discussed the band’s turmoil relationship with Tyler. For the band’s pair of recent one-off shows in Hawaii and Abu Dhabi, Perry said Tyler took a separate jet than the band and then stayed in a different hotel and even a different dressing room (a process that also happened often during their summer tour). The band never saw Tyler until they all walked on stage to start their show.

“Maybe we’ll get a telegram from him,” Perry said. He also acknowledged that the band has discussed the possibility of bringing in another singer to work with, but stressed that it would be the true Aerosmith. The band was offered a trio of gigs in South America but according to Perry, when he called Tyler to discuss the possibility of performing, the front man hung on him.

Also on Monday, Perry made the following statement through his Twitter page: “Aerosmith is definitely NOT breaking up. One of the members is doing his own thing and said so in the press. That’s all I know.” He went on to say, “Aerosmith is positively looking for a new singer to work with. You just can’t take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin!”

Though things are not looking good at the moment, there is still room for optimism for Aerosmith fans. “As long as we’re still kicking,” Perry said in his interview with WZLX, “it’s not over.”

Meanwhile, Perry is gearing up for two New England show this weekend in support of his new solo album, Have Guitar, Will Travel. On Friday, he’ll play the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom and on Saturday, he’ll hit Boston’s House of Blues.
