It sure has been an exciting month for cover bands in Boston. Now in its second year, the Boston Music Spotlight Battle of the Cover Bands expanded to a bigger and better format for 2010 and the results were even more exciting than expected.

In a search to find the area’s best cover band, this year’s battle moved to a tournament style where Red Square (night #1), the Grab Brothers Band (night #2) and Big Party Orchestra (night #3) each edged out tough competition over the past three Thursdays at Hennessy’s Hooley House to earn a spot in the finals. With two Wild Card spots open, we’re pleased to announced that the preliminary round winners will be joined by Remedy (night #1) and The Whammy Bars (night #3) at the finals, which will be held at Oliver’s Nightclub at the Cask’n Flagon on Thursday, May 13.

We also want to extend a special thanks to all of the other participating bands: Yesterday, Run For Covers, Road Soda, Brian Scully Band and Drop Zone. Each of these bands brought their own unique style to the stage and thrilled the crowds with enjoyable sets.

Beyond bragging rights, the final bands will be competing for a grand prize worth over $2,500 and including: cash, a paid gig at Hennessy’s, a professional photoshoot from Dise Photography, graphic design services from Beachwood Graphics, and printing services from Printing Sources, Inc.

The competing bands will perform before a panel of judges at each of the shows. They will be judged on in the following categories: Musicianship, Vocals, Timing of Set, Stage Presence, and Crowd Reaction. Points are awarded on a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the highest. Points in the Crowd Reaction category will be worth double.
