2011 Newport Jazz Festival lineup announced

Organizers for the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival lineup have revealed the initial lineup for the 57th edition of the historic festival, which is set for August 5 to 7. Leading the way will be this year’s Best New Artist Grammy Award-winner and Berklee College of Music alumnus Esperanza Spalding, along with veteran Wynton Marsalis and New Orlean’s rising star Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.

The Rhode Island festival will kick off on Friday, August 5 with an opening concert featuring Marsalis and Michael Feinstein with Joe Negri at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino. Tickets for the kick-off show, which range in price from $40 to $100, will go on sale Tuesday, April 5 though Ticketmaster.

On Saturday and Sunday, the festival will return to the grounds of Fort Adams State Park. Spalding and Trombone Shorty will perform on both days, as will Hiromi. Eddie Palmieri, Regina Carter and Steve Coleman are among the performers scheduled for Saturday, while the Ravi Coltrane Quartet, Brubeck Brothers and Angélique Kidjo are set for Sunday. The full lineup for each day is available below.

General Admission tickets for the Fort Adams State Park portion of the festival will go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster for $69 (tickets will rise to $75 on the festival weekend). A limited number of 2-day passes are available for $125. Discounted tickets for children between 3 and 15-years of age are available for $15, while children under 2 will be admitted for free. There will also be a reserved seating section on one side of the grass in front of the Fort Stage with tickets ranging in price from $85 to $100.
